Comstock Township is updating its rules for temporary outdoor sales and services, with the Planning Commission voting to recommend approval of a revised ordinance at its June 11 meeting.
The changes head to the Township Board for a first reading on Monday, June 16.
The revisions were developed over several meetings and reviewed with the Township’s attorney. Key changes include:
- Zoning flexibility: Previous restrictions limiting temporary outdoor sales to non-vacant lots have been removed. Sales are now permitted in residential zones as long as the activity aligns with a permitted use in that zoning district.
- More time on site: Permit holders can now renew up to three times per calendar year, allowing up to 120 days of operation — double the previous 60-day limit.
- Paved surface requirement removed: Sales no longer must take place on a paved surface.
- Hours aligned with noise ordinance: Operating hours will follow the Township’s existing noise ordinance rather than a separate standard.
- Signage streamlined: A temporary sign is now built into the outdoor sales permit application, eliminating the need to file a separate sign permit.
No public comments were received during the public hearing. Commissioners voted unanimously to recommend the ordinance changes to the Township Board.
