Comstock Township’s updated outdoor sales ordinance is official: what residents and vendors need to know

2 Min Read

Comstock Township’s revised ordinance for temporary outdoor sales and services is official, following final approval by the Township Board at a June 18 special meeting.

The Planning Commission recommended the update earlier this month, and the Township Board passed it unanimously after a brief second reading. Here’s what the ordinance covers and how it works.

Who this applies to

The ordinance governs temporary outdoor sales and services in the township. Treasurer Sandra Bloomfield pointed to seasonal produce stands and fireworks vendors as the activities the rule was written for. It allows these temporary uses in applicable zoning districts as long as the activity aligns with what’s otherwise permitted in that district.

How the permit works

A permit is required, and applications go through review by the township’s fire, building, and zoning officials before approval.

Permits run for an initial 30 days. They can be renewed up to three additional times at no cost, for a maximum total of 120 days per calendar year.

Rules for operation

  • Hours: 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Signage: Temporary signs up to 36 square feet are allowed and are included in the sales permit application — no separate sign permit is needed.
  • Location: Sales no longer need to take place on a paved surface, a change from the previous ordinance.

Where this came from

The Planning Commission developed the revised ordinance over several meetings this spring, working with the township’s attorney to update rules that previously limited outdoor sales to non-vacant lots and capped renewals at a single 60-day extension. The commission voted unanimously to recommend the changes to the Township Board, and no public comments were submitted during that earlier public hearing.

Where to apply

Residents and vendors with questions about applying for a temporary outdoor sales permit should contact the Comstock Township offices directly.
