Comstock Township’s board approved $37,000 for traffic calming measures on Casper Street, after years of resident complaints about cut-through speeding traffic.
The board voted unanimously to fund speed humps and a traffic circle on the street, using money from this year’s and next year’s road millage budget. Findings from a Road Commission traffic study were presented, which identified the Comstock Township segment of Casper Street as meeting the threshold for cut-through traffic remediation. A similar segment of the same street in neighboring Kalamazoo Township did not meet that threshold, based on the same study.
The Road Commission’s engineers identified speed humps and a traffic circle, out of sixteen possible measures studied, as the appropriate remedy for the area.
The Road Commission recommended the township move forward with the project and offered to handle bidding and inspections directly, since its engineering work on the corridor is already complete. The board’s approval directs township road funds toward the estimated $37,000 cost rather than passing it on to residents through a special assessment. Township officials said the project could not be added to the Road Commission’s 2026 construction schedule, meaning work is expected to begin in a future construction season.
