Kalamazoo Township’s supervisor said there is no plan to sell or eliminate Grand Prairie Golf Course, addressing rumors that have circulated for months.
Supervisor David Combs used his board report to directly respond to community concern. The actual question before the board, he said, is who manages the course going forward, not whether it continues to exist. The course’s current management notified the township in December 2025 that they intend to end their contract after the 2026 season, prompting the board to begin planning a request for proposals for new management. That RFP is expected to go out within the next week, following input from board members.
Combs also addressed a specific rumor directly: an investor had inquired about purchasing the property, potentially to build housing. He confirmed the inquiry was real — township staff are required to bring such queries to the board — but said no offer was ever made and no plan to sell exists. He also pointed to a resolution passed by a previous township board in the early 1980s requiring the property be used for recreational purposes “in perpetuity.” The township purchased the land for just under $500,000 using a combination of operating funds, state grants, and federal grants.
Combs said the property is also being appraised for the first time since 1981, which he said is necessary for the township to know the value of its own asset and to determine appropriate insurance coverage — separate from any question of a sale.
Treasurer Clara Robinson, addressing the spread of rumors more broadly, said she was reminded of something a former teacher once told her: “Information walks, but misinformation flies.”
Several board members also weighed in on what they’d like to see going forward. Clerk Lisa Mackie said she wants the RFP to require that any future management maintain the course’s identity as an affordable, family-friendly course that builds community, telling those in attendance that the evening’s public comments made clear how much the course means to residents.
What’s next: The township plans to release its request for proposals for golf course management within the next week.
