Comstock Parks Commission Weighs Next Steps in Parks Director Search

Comstock Township’s Parks and Recreation Commission discussed next steps in its parks director search Monday after interviewing four applicants last week.

Staff told commissioners the township received about 40 applications for the position. Four applicants were interviewed, and interviewers are scoring candidates individually. Chair Teresa Young said she would like to move quickly toward second-round interviews with the top two, because strong candidates may not stay available. Commissioners also discussed reviewing remaining applications to confirm no other candidates compare.

The commission approved a salary range for the position, not including benefits. The range was not listed in the meeting packet but was stated during the meeting, and we encourage you to watch the recording of the meeting. Commissioners noted that benefits are part of the total offer and said the cost of insurance coverage can’t be estimated until a hire is made. Staff said the handbook describes the benefits offered.

Commissioners also passed a motion to pay the staff member serving as acting director at the same level as the departing director, until a new director is hired.

Second-round interviews follow a township process that includes additional checks. Commissioners also discussed how the department’s staffing might be structured, and Young said a job description may need updating. The 2027 budget was also discussed, and commissioners plan to meet with staff to review budget lines.
