| The Faraday Bag is a little sack that shields its contents from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP), Electromagnetic Field Radiation (EMF), Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), and Static Discharge. More importantly to teachers, it blocks TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, and anything else mischievous students want to access with their phones. The technology for the Faraday Bag is, unsurprisingly, even more valuable to the military, the government, corporations, and other entities who have more to worry about than kids watching #nananadance videos. Faraday Defense is the company behind the little bags, and they focus on items such as field bags, tents, chambers (essentially small rooms), and other products of great interest to lots of serious people. What does this have to do with anything? Well, it turns out that Faraday Defense, this wicked cool company, is based in Kalamazoo, MI, and they’re expanding into the Western Michigan University Business, Technology, and Research which is technically in Oshtemo Charter Township. The company behind the tech to keep teachers sane and computers safe from EMP attacks will be down the street from Costco. And why, you might rightly ask, do I know any of this? Because I watched the May 28 Oshtemo Township Board Meeting on PublicMediaNet.org. The trustees engaged with Kyle Sischo, from Faraday Defense, where they talked about the many benefits that would come to Osthemo upon the completion of their new building including more than $66,000 from connecting to the Township’s sewers. Mr. Sischo and Faraday Defense were requesting a tax abatement. No spoilers, but I highly recommend you watch the exchange for yourself. You can start at about minute 26:00. My friends in teaching may not care about Faraday Defense’s contribution to Oshtemo Townships’ sewage but they will be extremely thankful for the minutes of quiet the Faraday Bags may provide.
