The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners adopted the county’s 2027 budget October 20, with further adjustments possible at its November 4 meeting.
The budget covers January 1 through December 31, 2027. Before the final vote, commissioners amended it to accept recommendations from the board’s Finance and Administration Committee. The amendment moved savings from several departmental line items into the budget’s contingency line. Vice Chair John Taylor said most of those savings came from legal services after the county brought its legal team in-house.
Taylor said he plans to bring additional motions at the next meeting. They would address cost-of-living adjustments for county employees, how investment income from the housing millage is treated, and the county’s appropriation to Southwest Michigan First. County administration recommended taking up those items through later budget adjustments rather than at the adoption vote.
Interim County Administrator Terrell Cole thanked the board for adopting the budget and said work on the county’s financial and operational goals will continue.
The board’s next meeting is Wednesday, Nov. 4, rather than Tuesday, because of Election Day.
