Oshtemo Township’s board adopted a six-month moratorium on large-scale commercial solar energy development.
The moratorium, approved 7-0 on second reading at the August 11, 2026 meeting, pauses new solar development while the township’s Planning Commission works on a comprehensive Energy Systems Ordinance to govern siting, design, construction, and decommissioning standards for future solar projects. Township officials described the moratorium as a “police ordinance,” distinct from the township’s zoning code, adopted to protect public health, safety, and welfare while the more detailed zoning regulations are developed.
No members of the public spoke during the public comment period on the item, and board discussion was brief. Officials noted the vote marks the board’s final step in this phase of the process. The Planning Commission now takes the lead on drafting the actual solar energy regulations that will eventually replace the moratorium.
What’s next: The moratorium remains in effect for six months unless amended or repealed, while the Planning Commission develops the township’s new Energy Systems Ordinance.
