On-demand rides, free student passes, and an August millage – Metro Transit’s update to county commissioners

Kalamazoo Metro Transit updated the County Board of Commissioners on its operations and an upcoming ballot question. On August 4, voters countywide will decide on a millage renewal to fund Metro Connect and Metro Share, the services that connect riders across the county beyond the core fixed-route system. Executive Director Sean McBride highlighted the Metrolink on-demand service, which uses a phone app to book short connecting rides with an average wait of about 18 minutes, and a youth mobility program providing free rides to students in partnership with local schools. Metro Transit also described its emergency response role in providing roughly 1,200 free rides during extreme cold this past winter and building out service in Pavilion Township following the 2024 tornado.
Plus: The board also voted on first reading to redirect remaining ARPA funds originally allocated to the Sunset Lake Dam reconstruction which received additional grant and philanthropic support and no longer needs the full county allocation to the Parker Drain project, relieving cost pressure on residents and other contributing entities. The drain project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
