The Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Education approved 2026-27 contracts with the UAW administrators union and food service managers union, both previously ratified by their memberships, at its July 23 meeting. The board also appointed Tammo Nelson, currently principal at Indian Prairie Elementary, as the new principal of Milwood Elementary. Superintendent Slade reported on the groundbreaking for the bond-funded El Sol Elementary School, expected to open in about two years, and free sports physicals will be offered August 4-6 for students joining fall sports. State Rep. Julie Rogers briefed the board on Michigan’s newly signed FY2027 school aid budget, which increases per-pupil funding by $250 (to $10,300 total), continues free breakfast and lunch for all students, and makes at-risk student funding permanent in state law.
