Kalamazoo Public Schools closed out the school year with a board meeting full of recognition, including students competing at state and national levels, and staff honored by the parents who know their work best.

At Linden Grove Middle School, the Science Olympiad team is only in its second year of existence. That didn’t stop them from placing eighth at regionals, qualifying for the state tournament, and winning first place in the solar system event, collecting 11 medals across 23 events. At the state meet in April, they placed 50th out of 80 teams.

At Loy Norrix High School, the DECA chapter, a business and entrepreneurship competition program, brought nearly 50 students to the state competition this year and sent a select group to the national competition in Atlanta, Georgia.

The evening also included special education staff awards presented by KPS’s parent advisory council from nominations written by parents of students with IEPs and 504 plans. Three staff members were recognized across elementary, middle, and high school levels, honored for building student confidence, easing anxiety, and making families feel their children are in good hands.
