From intern to reporter: Tatianna’s Story

3 Min Read

From intern to fellow to reporter – Tatianna knows the power of public media from more angles than most!

“I was back in Kalamazoo for my final semester of college and looking for a place to do an internship in either film, television, or media. By some miracle, I remembered PMN, called them up and asked if I could intern with them.

What impressed me most was the fact that they worked with me to actually create an internship, which was tailored to my interests. I was able to gain a lot of hands-on experience. I love live television production and so I was able to help cover the live City Commission meetings at City Hall and assist with the production of Behind the Badge, a talk show produced by a community member. I also worked with the Amplify Kalamazoo team covering local events and highlighting lesser-known organizations and nonprofits.

After my internship, I came back to PMN as a Frank Jamison Fellow and was able to concentrate on producing one main video feature while also practicing my interview skills and collaborating with the other Frank Jamison Fellows.

In the fall [of 2024], I started as PMN’s Multimedia Reporter working full-time as part of the Amplify Kalamazoo team. So, from intern to Frank Jamison Fellow to Multimedia Reporter, none of this would have been possible if I hadn’t reached out. That internship led me to where I am today connecting with and uplifting community members, sharing and bringing attention to important organizations, and continuing to improve my technical skills.

And where would our community be without PMN? To quote Joni Mitchell, “Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone?” I hope this isn’t the case with PMN. Anytime someone comes and visits PMN for the first time, their reaction is pretty much the same. They are blown away by the facility, the equipment, and the fact that we have all this available for people to create their own show or gain more technical experience, like I was able to.

I think if people come and see the space and understand all the amazing work we’re doing here, they’ll want to get involved or support in any way that they can.

Just pick up the phone and call us (269-343-2211)! Sign up for one of our information sessions so you can learn more and check out the space! You won’t regret taking the first step, you’ll only regret not taking it.
