Gavel to Gavel: Upcoming Local Government Meetings and Key Agenda Items – January 5 – 8

We’re back in the New Year with another week of Local Government Meetings!


Monday (01/05):

City of Kalamazoo Committee of the Whole (5:00 PM, PMN4): The Committee of the Whole will meet to hold a training session for commissioners on the Rezoning and Variance Request process.

Kalamazoo City Commission (7:00 PM, PMN4): The Kalamazoo City Commission meets Monday at 7:00 PM, conducting business for the first time in 2026. City Manager Malcom Hankins will take his Oath of Office, the Commission will set the number of levied mills and approve budget administration for this year, as well as adopt the Safe Streets for All Safety Action Plan. Finally, the Commission will approve a Public Hearing scheduled for January 26, 2025 to receive comments on an ordinance to rezone the property at 4301 Stadium Drive from Residential (RM-15 and RS-5) to Community Commercial (CC).

Comstock Township Board (6:00 PM, PMN3): The Comstock Board will hear a presentation on Fire Department response times, as well as an update on Architectural Services for the new Fire Station. The Board will also provide first reading of Ordinance No. 565: 6787 E H Ave & 3615 N 28th Street Conditional Rezoning Request, where Redwood Apartment Neighborhoods seeks to build multi-dwelling units. Tuesday (01/06):

Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners Organizational Meeting (6:00 PM, PMN4): The County Board of Commissioners will elect the officers of Chair, Vice-Chair, and Vice-Chair Pro-Tem.

Wednesday (01/07):

City of Kalamazoo Planning Commission (7:00 PM, PMN4): The January 7, 2026 Planning Commission meeting has been canceled due to lack of agenda items.

Thursday (01/08):

City of Kalamazoo Utility Policy Committee (8:30 AM, PMN4): When available, UPC Meeting Materials can be found here.

Oshtemo Township Planning Commission (6:00 PM, PMN3): Oshtemo’s Planning Commission will review the first draft of various amendments to the Zoning Ordinance, as well as confirm 2026 meeting dates.

Comstock Township Planning Commission (6:00 PM, PMN2): The regular meeting of the Planning Commission scheduled for Thursday, January 8, 2026, has been canceled due to lack of agenda items.

City of Kalamazoo Zoning Board of Appeals (7:00 PM, PMN4): QuikTrip Corporation is requesting a
dimensional variance at 3810 E. Cork Street, to authorize 49 off-street parking spaces, where the maximum number of off-street parking spaces is 40 parking spaces. Then, Discover Kalamazoo is requesting three Dimensional Variances and two Natural Features Protection Ordinance Variances for the Kalamazoo County Youth Sports Facility at 1617 N. Drake Rd.
