The skills that shaped Eden’s story

Eden didn’t expect to find a turning point on a trip to the library.

But in 2021, while visiting the downtown Kalamazoo Public Library, Eden spotted a poster in the glass encased bulletin board. It mentioned film production and journalism instruction – exactly the opportunity she’d been searching for.

“My college didn’t offer journalism classes, and I was looking for something to supplement my education,” she said. “I immediately walked down the block and asked how I could participate.” That moment led her to being involved here in many ways at Public Media Network. And it helped launch her career.

“When I first decided to become a journalist, I never would’ve pictured myself doing anything besides writing,” Eden said. “PMN has taught me all aspects of filmmaking, including lighting, audio, scriptwriting and interviewing techniques, editing, effects, and distribution.” It wasn’t just the technical training that stuck – it was what she was able to create with it.

Eden’s favorite project was her documentary Bridging the Grocery Gap about a local grocery store in her Edison neighborhood (watch here). It was a story close to her heart, and it gave her the chance to shine a light on a place the community often overlooked.

“I really enjoyed having candid conversations about my community and understanding unique perspectives,” she said. “It felt fulfilling to bring awareness to my neighborhood, which is often disregarded and underappreciated.”

Through every production, Eden built confidence in her storytelling, and also in herself.

“I feel more confident in my abilities since learning practical, hands-on skills that I may not have learned in a classroom,” she said. “I even landed my first major journalism role as a direct result of my work at PMN. I am eternally grateful.”

All that growth and hard work paid off. From creating her own documentary, to volunteering on shoots, to an internship, Eden has been involved here in so many ways, and we’re so thankful for her. We can’t wait to see what Eden does next!

And to anyone wondering if they have what it takes to tell their own story?

“You should do it!” she said. “Your story doesn’t have to be groundbreaking, or super polished, or perfectly executed – just go for it.”

At PMN, we believe media should be accessible to everyone. That’s why we offer the training, tools, and support to help people like Eden and you learn to tell their own stories, in their own voices. Learn more here.

By the way, Eden’s videos (there are three total, if you want to watch the others click here) were shot and edited by our wonderful interns! Didn’t they do a fantastic job?
