Sarah Horton interviews Morgan Pell about the unique, functional art pieces she creates.

Sarah Horton was simply looking to fulfill a requirement for her journalism classes when she discovered Public Media Network. One thing led to another and now she has an article published in Encore magazine!

Sarah completed the Frank Jamison Fellowship, a competitive program here at PMN for outstanding students with the potential to become impactful producers, journalists, and advocates for communities. As part of her fellowship, Sarah created a video about Morgan Pell, a local one of a kind artist who creates beautiful, hand-made brooms, among other functional art pieces.

“It was really special to be a part of this project. Morgan was phenomenal and welcomed me into her world without hesitation,” Sarah shared. “I learned a lot by collaborating with Lem [Fellowship mentor] – especially watching how he visualized the story beforehand and provided insight during the editing process.”

But Sarah didn’t stop there. After a discussion one afternoon at PMN with Marie Lee, the editor of Encore magazine, the idea came around that a written article about Morgan and her artistry would make for a great piece.

“By spotlighting community members and telling their stories attentively, we have a chance to deepen appreciation and understanding of each other,” Sarah says. “Personally, this project was a reminder of how interpersonal connections can open up new opportunities.”

Sarah’s article was published in Encore’s April edition. You can also read her article online here.

Sarah’s video captures the hard work and dedication that go into Morgan’s craft. “I think the impact of videos like this might be small at first but can impact the ethos of the greater community.” Watch the video here!

It’s always wonderful to see where connections can lead you to – you never know what chances will come along! For Sarah, her course requirements led her to the Frank Jamison Fellowship which led her to writing an article for Encore magazine. Who knows what’s next in store for her? We’re proud of all she’s done so far and know she has great things waiting for her.

What about you? What chance are you waiting to take? Don’t just take my advice – take Sarah’s: “You have something to contribute. There are people who are more experienced, more skilled and more educated than you. Instead of letting that intimidate you, get out and learn from people who know more than you do.”
