The Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Education held its May 7 meeting with an unusually student-centered agenda.
The student advisory council presented on the Knights Health Center at Loy Norrix High School, sharing usage data and advocating for similar centers statewide.
A student from the Kalamazoo Virtual Program interviewed their own parent on camera, a moment trustees suggested could serve as promotional material for the program. Students from Kalamazoo Central highlighted the school’s academic and athletic achievements, attributing success to a diverse and supportive environment.
Phoenix High School seniors focused on anti-bullying, multilingual student support, and work-based learning. KLP seniors made the case for alternative education as a genuine pathway, not a fallback.
The board also acknowledged the recent passage of a millage and the community support behind it.
