The Township’s new resolution spells out rules for dropbox payments, postmark policy, and who has to sign off before a late fee gets waived.
Kalamazoo Township residents who pay their property taxes by mail or after-hours dropbox have new formal procedures governing how those payments are handled, and the Township Board approved them at its June 22nd meeting.
The resolution, brought forward jointly by Superintendent Tracie Moored and Treasurer Clara Robinson, codifies several practices into official policy. Taxes dropped in the Township’s after-hours dropbox on the due date will be treated as on time when retrieved the following morning. Postmarked envelopes, however, do not count — payment must physically arrive by the due date, a policy Robinson noted has appeared on Township tax bills previously but is now formalized in writing.
The resolution also establishes a check on penalty waivers. If a property owner’s circumstances warrant waiving a late fee, the decision now requires sign-off from the treasurer, the clerk, and the superintendent jointly — rather than resting with any single official.
Summer tax bills will be available online starting July 1st, with mailed copies expected to hit mailboxes the second week of July.
