Gavel to Gavel: Upcoming Local Government Meetings and Key Agenda Items – April 20 – 23

Tune in for another week of Local Government Meetings! Let’s highlight some key agenda items this week.

Monday (04/20)

City of Kalamazoo Committee of the Whole (5:00 PM, PMN4): The Committee of the Whole will hold a work session discussing WMU Student Government Engagement and giving a report on the City Commission Retreat.

Kalamazoo City Commission (7:00 PM, PMN4): The City Commission meeting will feature a Public Hearing regarding the Program Year 2026 Action Plan. Also there will be a vote on the approval of the sale of 808 Simpson Street to Kalamazoo Neighborhood Housing Services, in the amount of $500. Then, Commissioners will vote whether to authorize the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority to accept a Brownfield Redevelopment Grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy in support of the Kalrecovery Housing Project.

Tuesday (04/21)

Road Commission of Kalamazoo County (3:00 PM, PMN2): When available, Road Commission of Kalamazoo County Meeting Materials can be found here.

Kalamazoo County Committee of the Whole (4:00 PM, PMN3): The Committee of the Whole will vote on a resolution authorizing placement of a Child Care (Early Learning) Millage on the August 4, 2026 ballot. This seeks to have the voters determine whether or not they support raising funds for the purpose of supporting such Child Care programs by authorizing a millage of up to 0.5 mills ($.50 on each $1,000 of taxable value) for 10 years. Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners (6:30 PM, PMN3): The County Board will continue discussion and work on the revised Conflict of Interest form and policy for Commissioners.

City of Kalamazoo Historic District Commission (5:00 PM, PMN4): The Historic District Commission of the City of Kalamazoo will review applications for alterations at 703 S Park, 471 W South ST, 111 Portage, and 830 W Vine.

Wednesday (04/22)

Comstock Township Downtown Development Authority (5:30 PM, PMN3): Following the resignation of four board members and the DDA Director, the Comstock Township DDA includes new members, and intends to discuss release of a statement regarding last month’s resignations. The new members listed include William Knight, John Scholly, Matt Elliot, and Jaspreet Nannan. The DDA will also elect new Board Officers, with the Agenda stating intent to appoint Jeffery Townsend as Chair and Keith Wilcher as Vice Chair.

City of Kalamazoo Historic Preservation Commission (6:00 PM, PMN4): The Historic Preservation Commission will review Historic Preservation Awards of Merit Nominations for Lynn Smith Houghton and Blair Bates.

Thursday (04/23)

Oshtemo Township Planning Commission (6:00 PM, PMN3): The Oshtemo Township Planning Commission is set to conduct site plan and special exception use review of a proposed addition to the City of Kalamazoo water system building and related site improvements. They will hold a Public Hearing for this proposal at Thursday’s meeting. Also on the Agenda, a Public Hearing and special exception use review of a proposed Unified Care Facility consisting of two Adult Foster Care Small Group Homes at an existing home at 5516 West N Avenue and the adjacent vacant parcel.

Comstock Township Planning Commission (6:00 PM, PMN2): Comstock’s Planning Commission will review a Rezoning request for 8546 East G Ave and hold a Public Hearing at Thursday night’s meeting.

Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Education (7:00 PM, PMN5): When available, KPS Board of Education meeting materials will be posted here.
