Should Oshtemo restrict backyard burning? The township board is weighing its options.

The Oshtemo Township Board spent significant time on two planning topics at its May 12 meeting.

On open burning, the board discussed options ranging from a full ban to partial restrictions in denser residential areas, a commercial ban, or revised rules with permit fees. No decision was reached, but the conversation surfaced real tensions between air quality, fire safety, and community practice.

Separately, the board received an update on the West Main and Drake Scenario Planning Project, a grant-funded effort to anticipate road and development needs in a fast-growing corridor with particular attention to keeping commercial traffic out of residential areas as new development arrives.
