Spotlight Community Service: You’re Not Broken, You’re Just Human

Host Joseph Patrick Fair welcomes back Dr. Julie Sorenson for a second appearance on Spotlight Community Service, this time to talk about her book, “You’re Not Broken, You’re Human.”

Sorenson, a licensed professional counselor specializing in trauma and anxiety, walks viewers through how chronic stress and difficult experiences shape the nervous system, behavior, and the way people see themselves. “Healing does not begin by trying to fix yourself,” she tells Fair early in the conversation, describing it instead as a process of understanding oneself with compassion rather than judgment.

The two talk through what that process can look like in practice — building a “mental health to-go kit” for tough moments, working through what Sorenson calls the “Five Ts” of healing, and pushing back on the idea that therapy is only for people in crisis. Sorenson also shares her own path to writing the book, which grew out of a weekly blog for her private practice before becoming a full manuscript.

It’s a grounded, conversational hour for anyone curious about mental health, self-compassion, or what it actually takes to start feeling like yourself again.
